In the UK a few metres below our feet, the earth maintains a
constant temperature of around 11 -12C throughout the year.
Because of the ground’s high thermal mass it stores heat
from the sun during the summer months. Ground source heat
pumps (GSHP) are able to use this heat to produce hot water
for space heating and domestic hot water. In a well designed
system every unit of electricity used (which can be provided
via the grid or by renewable sources) will deliver 3-4 units
of heat. As well as GSHP, air and water source heat pumps are also available. Heat pumps work best with underfloor heating, which is probably the most comfortable central heating available. |
